International ecommerce growth "Born in the USA"

If profitable international expansion is your goal avoid opening up sales to unprofitable overseas markets or utilising expensive or problematic delivery solutions.

This post is for e-commerce businesses that are yet to expand internationally or those that are serving overseas consumers but having to subsidise the cost from their product margin or profitable sales in other areas.

UK based e-commerce businesses usually focus on the home market to begin with. As their B2C business matures and the UK customer base grows a natural next-step is to begin considering exporting products to overseas consumers.

This is logical, but… not all international markets are created equally.

Many countries are extremely expensive to serve ex-UK from a shipping perspective and therefore it can be extremely challenging to open up these lanes profitably.

In this video from my ponderings on a recent dog walk I give three reasons why the US should be your main focus when starting your journey to global expansion. The three reasons are:

  • Ease of access

  • Size of market

  • Diverse shipping + returns options

When done well the US can be just as profitable as the UK, but with a vastly increased Total Addressable Market (TAM).

There are many, many examples of UK based brands and retailers that have conquered the US market to a level where their US sales dwarf their UK numbers due to a combination of these three reasons, and you can join them.

For a UK based e-commerce seller there is NO BETTER PLACE TO START your cross-border journey and focus your efforts and marketing budgets on than the US.
