A 3PL (third-party logistics provider) stores your stock and handles receiving, picking, packing, dispatch and often returns for you. Self-fulfilment makes sense early on: low volumes, high-touch products, tight brand control. But there's a tipping point. Once packing eats hours of your day, storage gets tight, or next-day cut-offs start slipping, a 3PL usually starts to pay off. • Contract terms. Minimum commitments, notice periods, exit clauses. "Trapped again" is a common one brands bring to us.
• Proof, not promises. References from brands with a similar order profile to yours, not generic case studies.
• Integration fit. Clean Shopify (or platform) integration so you're not firefighting orders.
• Peak and growth capacity. Can they handle your busiest month, not just your average one.

Watch for creeping accessorial charges, storage minimums that don't flex with your stock, mis-picks or late dispatch turning routine, and support that can't keep pace with your orders. Rising cost alone isn't the signal. Rising cost without a matching rise in service is. Sound familiar? It's worth a proper comparison rather than assuming it's just the price of scale.
